A short about how sugarcane workers in the Dominican Republic started a folkloric movement and their contribution to the world.

I grew up with mystical beings: dancers.

You’d first hear the sound of mirrors and tiny bells clashing to the rhythm of drums and triangles.

You’d then see their dark eyes and melanin beneath the mask, bright ribbons and peacock feathers, reflecting the Dominican sun.

This is a Guloya.

In this short, we explore their immigrant roots, sugarcane history and the larger than life folkloric contribution to the world.

A film Directed, Shot and Edited by yours truly.
